APC Picks Governor Rotimi Amaechi as Presidential campaign coordinator

Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi has been announced as the Director General of APC’s Presidential campaign. His appointment is contained in a statement released by the National Secretary of the party today December 18th. See the full text of the appointment letter below..
The All Progressives Congress, APC, has named Gov. Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State as the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Organization, which will drive the party’s efforts to win the 2015 presidential election.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the party said the announcement followed the hugely successful convention at which its presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, was democratically elected, and the follow-up successful choice of his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.
It said Gov. Amaechi’s outstanding reputation as a man of courage, principle, strength of character, decency and love of country, as well as his administrative prowess and organizational skills combined to fetch him perhaps the most important task in the quest for positive change in Nigeria.
APC thanked Nigerians for their support and prayers toward the success of the convention, the emergence of Gen. Buhari as the APC presidential candidate and the choice of Prof. Osinbajo as his running mate.
The party said it believed it had lived to its promise to Nigerians to ensure that the choice of its presidential running mate would be made within the context of the best democratic ideals, considering the enormously-positive reactions from the general public to the choice of Prof. Osinbajo.
”With a presidential candidate that has rekindled the hopes of the citizenry and revived their belief in democratic ideals, we believe we must also choose a running mate that will complement the sterling qualities of the presidential candidate. We must confess that the choice was a tough one, considering the array of eminently-qualified and outstanding candidates that we had to choose from.
”Yes, we were spoilt for choice but, in the end, we picked as running mate a man whose pedigree, nationally, sub-regionally, regionally and globally, attests to the fact that our party, the APC, is a repository of high quality leadership materials, and that our country, Nigeria, has no shortage of the very best human resources,” it said.
APC said whether in the academic, legal or ecclesial world, Prof. Osinbajo stands much taller than his physical frame, and serves as a good accompaniment to our presidential candidate, himself a man of such rare sterling qualities that have stood the test of time, qualities that are now so sorely lacking in our country’s leadership.
”Our presidential running mate is an award-winning professor of law, a legal luminary, a gentleman, a much-sought-after public speaker, a tested administrator, an author and a man of great ecclesiastical standing.
”Educated in Nigeria and the UK, Prof. Osinbajo is a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, who has served in many organizations and professional bodies in Nigeria, West Africa, Africa and the United Nations. He has authored or edited over a dozen publications, has taught and practised law at the high levels, and has served on the Editorial Boards of learned publications and non-legal publications, in addition to publishing many articles in learned journals.
”Now that we have presented Nigerians with the best possible choices for the exalted positions of President and Vice President, we expect that citizens, who have been yearning for quality leadership, will use their voting power to put Nigeria firmly on the path of greatness. A country seeking to be among the greats in the comity of nations cannot afford to have a mediocre leadership,” the party said.

ISIS executes 150 women for refusing to marry militants

ISIS has executed at least 150 women for refusing to marry militants in Iraq, Turkish media has reported.
A statement released by Iraq’s Ministry of Human Rights on Tuesday said the militants had attacked women in the western Iraqi province of Al-Anbar before burying them in mass graves in Falluja.
Some of the women killed were pregnant at the time, according to the Anadolu Agency.
“At least 150 females, including pregnant women, were executed in Fallujah by a militant named Abu Anas Al-Libi after they refused to accept jihad marriage,”Many families were also forced to migrate from the province’s northern town of Al-Wafa after hundreds of residents received death threats.”

The new bank note unveiled recently by President Jonathan will be distributed today. All branches of CBN have been directed to commence issuance of the currency in their respective locations.

According to the Corporate Communications Department of CBN, the commemorative note will circulate alongside the existing N100 note.

After a successful 20 years of acting, top Nollywood actress, singer and philanthropist Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has revealed that she intends to celebrate her 20th Nollywood anniversary in 2015 by going on a world tour.

In a video posted on YouTube recently, the thespian, who made her Nollywood debut in 1995, made this disclosure but did not reveal the specific countries she would be touring yet.

See Africa’s Top 10 Most Prosperous Countries

According to new research from the Legatum Institute, which last week ranked prosperity in 38 African countries around criteria ranging from economics to education to health, the title belongs to Botswana, the diamond-rich country in southern Africa.

As well as posting a relatively high per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $15,176, Botswana also fared well in terms of governance, education and personal freedom. As the country spends 8% of its GDP on education, it is among the biggest proportional spenders in the world according to the World Bank. This is the third year in a row that Botswana has topped the index.
In contrast, the Central African Republic was the lowest ranked country on the continent. The country, which has a per capita GDP of $584, has seen increasing violence since the end of 2012, and only 21.5% of the population have access to sanitation according to the prosperity index.
10. Senegal
Senegal ranks as the continent’s 10th most prosperous nation, according to Legatum Institute’s 2014 Africa Prosperity Report, up nine places since 2012.
9. Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso ranks ninth in the 2014 report, having risen by five places since 2012.

8. Rwanda

Rwanda was ranked the eighth most prosperous African nation. The report praised the country for “actively encouraging women” to shape the future of their country.

7. Ghana
Ghana has a vibrant economic spirit. The West African nation was ranked seventh in the prosperity rankings and was considered the second safest nation on the continent.
6. Algeria
The sixth most prosperous nation in Africa is Algeria. The country, where 93% of respondents have a cell phone, topped the economy index.

5. Tunisia

Tunisia is the fifth most prosperous African nation in 2014 according to the Legatum Institute. The country ranks first in the health sub-index and citizens have a life expectancy of 75 years — 17 years higher than the African average.

4. Namibia

Fourth most prosperous African country: Namibia, ranked second in the governance sub-index.

3. Morocco

Morocco is the third most prosperous African nation.

2. South Africa

South Africa ranked as the second most prosperous country in Africa, with nearly 40% of people surveyed saying it’s a good time to find a job.

1. Botswana

As well as beautiful natural heritage, Botswana is the most prosperous African country according to research conducted by the Legatum Institute. The landlocked country ranks first in the report’s governance index.

Thierry Henry retires from football

Former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry has announced his retirement from football after a trophy-laden 20-year career.
The 1998 World Cup winner, and Arsenal’s all-time leading goalscorer, left New York Red Bulls this month but there was speculation he might choose to play on at another club.
“It has been an incredible journey,” said the 37-year-old.
Henry is joining Sky Sports after being a World Cup pundit for the BBC.
The Frenchman, who also played for Monaco, Juventus, and Barcelona, scored 175 Premier League goals and is fourth on the list of all-time scorers.
Henry won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups with the Gunners, where he played between 1999 and 2007.
He added the Champions League trophy with Barcelona in 2009 and returned to Arsenal for four matches on loan from the Red Bulls in 2012, coming on as a substitute to score the winner against Leeds in the third round of the FA Cup.
In 1998, he was an unused substitute in the World Cup final victory over Brazil, though he went on to score three goals as France won Euro 2000.
“I would like to thank all the fans, team-mates and individuals involved with AS Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal, Barcelona, the New York Red Bulls and, of course, the French national team that have made my time in the game so special,” said Henry in a statement.
