The bodies of over 20 victims of the Nyanya bomb blasts were on
Saturday given a mass burial in an undisclosed location in Abuja.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the unclaimed corpses were removed from the
Asokoro General Hospital mortuary at about 10 a.m. The bodies were
loaded into body bags before they were taken away.
A source in the hospital who sought anonymity because she is not
authorised to speak on the matter said the hospital authorities decided
to bury the corpses because months after the incident, no one had come
to claim them.
“Months after the bomb blasts, the corpses were not claimed. When it
became obvious that the bodies might not be claimed, the authorities
decided to bury them,” she said.
Nyanya, a populous suburb of the Nigerian capital, Abuja, was rocked
by two different bomb explosions within two weeks. The first explosion
occurred at the Nyanya Motor Park on April 14 killing 75 people while
124 others were injured. On May 1, another explosion occurred a few
meters away from the first blast. Nineteen people were killed and 66
others injured in the second blast.
The explosions are believed to have been carried out by the Boko
Haram group whose insurgency has caused the death of over 13,000 people
and displaced hundreds of thousands.
